Classroom Tech Helps Schools Manage The Transition To Virtual And Hybrid Learning
David, the co-founder and product owner of the PMT Solution, pointed out the importance of building solutions that can work flexibly in different environments and environments. “Education technologies are here with solutions that take us into the next revolution of how we teach, learn, connect and succeed,” he said during a session at the 2021 Future of Education Wednesday. Technology Conference. Cockrell said that while schools are unable to make the same dramatic shifts as remote-focused businesses, there is a lot of room to continue to innovate educational technology in school settings, even as the institutions themselves change. He said he experienced this personally when he found himself paralyzed by a poorly integrated cloud experience as he helped his daughter record a video for class. “I didn’t know it would take me an hour to finally upload the video to where it needed to go,” he said. “No, it wasn’t because we edited it professionally; it was due to the lack of integration of tools. “ He stressed the need for infrastructure to manage student and teacher experiences in different environments. Maybe a teacher suddenly has to move a lesson to another part of the campus to make room for social distance, or an administrator needs access to a digital whiteboard. He challenged school districts to ask more of their suppliers to roll out these technologies. “Meet your needs and the needs of your people now and in the future,” Cockrell said during his Wednesday session. “Advocate for your schools by requiring your suppliers to care and unite to create solutions that can usher in the next revolution in education.” Whiteboard Technology That adapts It helps, of course, if the technology is already being built with flexibility in mind. Promethean, a maker of digital whiteboards, projectors and other classroom display tools, has helped schools adapt to distance learning by updating equipment for remote and hybrid classrooms, including enabling teachers to record lessons. Take and share. While the technology was not designed to cope with the recent massive shift in learning environments, it has nevertheless proved to be an effective tool for many school districts that made the leap, said Leslie Lowe, the company’s regional vice president of sales. “We literally moved from a physical to a strictly digital space over a weekend,” Lowe said during the session. Lowe noted during Thursday’s session that the whiteboard technology, which offers features such as easy screen sharing with students, helps to bring back some of the interactivity that can be lost in a remote or hybrid environment. It provides instant polling and real-time feedback through screen sharing software. “I can also use the same types of tools to increase rigor, ask students to respond to each other and develop ideas,” adds Lowe. The technology can also enable teachers to create educational offerings in asynchronous environments so that students can learn at different times. A popular feature that the company has recently added to its software is the ability to record lessons and save them in the standard MP4 format so lessons can be downloaded on demand. The company says it continues to make progress to build innovative, interactive experiences with easy-to-use cross-platform capabilities and strong security. Lowe said that even with 2020’s dramatic shifts, it was a good year for education technology. “What have we learned from this experience? Teachers and students are resilient and can quickly adapt curriculum and content across platforms, ”said Lowe. EdTech covers FETC, so bookmark this conference coverage page. New Projectors Make Any Wall An Interactive Whiteboard
Epson's new BrightLink 450Wi ultra short-throw projector eliminates the need for a separate IWB. In a move that could shake up the interactive whiteboard (IWB) market, two projector manufacturers have just released new products that can turn virtually any surface into an IWB. The development means schools no longer have to buy separate hardware to enjoy the benefits of IWBs, whose interactive surface and ability to engage students have made them quite popular in classrooms. “We would certainly consider this projector a game-changer,” said Claudine Wolas, project manager for Epson Electronics’ BrightLink 450Wi. “It’s not just the newest and latest in projectors, but in whiteboards as well.” The BrightLink projector, introduced Jan. 13, can be mounted to any type of classroom wall (of course, the smoother the better—and old-fashioned, non-electronic whiteboards work the best). Because it’s an ultra short-throw projector, it can project a whiteboard surface image from a very short distance, meaning that as a teacher or student interacts with the surface, no shadowing exists. The projector comes in XGA or PMT models, and images can be anywhere from 59 inches to 96 inches diagonally with PMT resolution, or from 55 inches to 85 inches with PMT resolution. (Click here for a full list of specs.) “The entire projection area is the interactive area,” explained Wolas. “Before, educators would have to consider board size in terms of both pricing and classroom size, and costs would differ accordingly. With this projector, which has Epson 3LCD technology and 2,500 lumens, now educators can choose any type of size for their IWB, at no cost increase. It’s every size of whiteboard in just one projector.” Educators and students can interact with the whiteboard surface using an infrared pen, and the software driving the system is platform-agnostic, meaning students and educators can work with virtually any Web 2.0 application, digital media file, or eTextbook. Epson also is partnering with RM Education to provide RM’s Easiteach interactive lesson software; however, the companies have not yet decided whether RM’s content will be provided free of charge with the projector or will come at an additional cost. As of press time, the BrightLink 450Wi was priced below $2,000 (including mount), and it will begin shipping this spring. The day before Epson announced its new BrightLink projector, Boxlight introduced a similar product, the ProjectoWrite2/W—a short-throw LCD projector with XGA resolution that can project an IWB surface up to 80 inches diagonally. The ProjectoWrite2/W improves upon a technology that Boxlight first unveiled in 2007. Epson and Boxlight aren’t the first companies to come out with technology that can turn any flat surface into an IWB. AVRover’s SVS200 with ONfinity CM2 Max is a portable AV system that can turn almost any surface into an IWB. And mimio’s Interactive System includes a small bar, stylus, mounting hardware, software, and USB interface that can attach to any dry-erase board or other surface to make it interactive. But to use these other systems, schools will still need a digital projector—whereas Epson’s and Boxlight’s solutions are self-contained. For less than $2,000—half the price of the average IWB—schools can have twice the number of IWB surfaces in their schools, simply by purchasing the BrightLink, Wolas said. “Or they can use the money saved for other school costs,” she added.
